I was the last fourth grader in my school’s spelling bee. In fact, I was one of the last contestants in all. Unfortunately, I transferred schools after that and shared a classroom with the girl who went to the championship in Washington so I never even won my class after that. Nonetheless, I consider myself a fairly decent speller. Others ask me how to spell things all the time. So you can imagine how upsetting it is for me to see what texting has done to spelling…until I read that the concept of correct spelling has only been around for a couple hundred years. That’s right. In the good old days, people just wrote words the way they sounded to them. There were 114 spellings of the word “through” for instance.
With that knowledge, I’ve decided to stop fretting about the way I spell words. If you’re half intelligent, you’ll be able to figure out what I mean. My stress level is already much lower.
