A Monkey Indeed

In the April issue of Fast Company magazine, the Made to Stick boys wrote about Amy Sutherland’s book, What Shamu Taught Me About Life, Love, and Marriage: Lessons for People from Animals and Their Trainers, in which she explains how the principles of least reinforcing scenario (LRS) can be used to enjoy a happy marriage. Dan and Chip Heath use this as a jumping off point to talk about “boss training.” Their article is titled, Your Boss is a Monkey. That just about says the whole thing.

Now don’t get into your head that I’ve become one of the politically correct, tightly puckered, looking to be insulted people that we have far too many of these days. I understand the humor in the article. I even appreciate the useful tips offered for dealing with those special people that always seem to be in charge in workplaces all across the country. It’s just the monkey reference that bothers me. Be careful who you call a monkey. They throw things when they get mad.
